At the start of Dec 2019, F&B Entrepreneur and Power 98FM Radio DJ Darren Wee weighed in at 90kgs – the heaviest he has ever been. But in 6.5 months (as of mid-May 2020), he has managed to shed off 22kgs by running 6 times a week, maintaining an active lifestyle with lots of walking, and without partaking in any special diet.
As the owner of multiple cafes and F&B ventures, the 35-year old found it a challenge to maintain a healthy and balanced diet due to the constant need to be keeping abreast with culinary trends. Also, the occasional spot-checking of his own café’s food, and multiple tasting sessions with his chefs during menu creation discussions; all made it even more difficult to stick to a healthy diet.

“I decided to start jogging again. I think it could been motivated by the fact that my clothes were starting to get too tight, or that my belts were running wayout of space for additional holes. Either way, you know it’s a wake-up call when even your newer clothes were starting not to fit as well,” says Darren.
But one day, he put his foot down (pardon the pun).
“I decided to start jogging again. I think it could have been motivated by the fact that my clothes were starting to get too tight, or that my belts were running out of space for additional holes. Either ways, you know it’s a wake-up call when even your newer clothes were starting not to fit as well,” says Darren.
He purchased a treadmill, some exercise wear, and a new pair of running shoes; and disciplined himself to use it at least 6 times a week. The first exercise session was a slow walk for 20 minutes. And even at that pace, Darren panted and perspired, and occasionally even felt nauseous.

He pressed on and persevered, making no excuses for himself despite a busy schedule. Six times a week was the target and he wasn’t about to let anything prevent him from reaching his goal. So much so that one could find him going for his jogs even in the wee hours of the morning due to him not being able to afford the time earlier in the day. “I think it’s important to finish what you set out to do. So regardless of how busy I might have been due to work, it was imperative for me to complete my day’s commitment to working out if I were to be losing any weight at all.”
Fast forward 6.5 months later, he can now comfortably complete a 10km run faster than the average individual.
Blast From The Past

10 years ago, Darren had previously lost 25kgs in 6 months through running at a public gym and adhering to the Atkins Diet. It was a remarkable feat, but it was simply not a sustainable one. It was also during that period of time that Darren also embarked on his entrepreneurial journey so it became harder for him to squeeze in time to run, and even harder to only have low-carb meals.
“The gym closed at 10pm daily so if I couldn’t make it in time, I had to forgo my day’s exercise routine. Low-carb meals were also tough to abide by because it was getting increasingly expensive.”
Sustainable Weight Maintenance
To prevent himself from slipping into obesity again, Darren has purchased yet another treadmill to place in his office for easier access, and plans to make time to run every other day so he won’t undo the good work that has been done over the past 6 months. Says the self-professed foodie, “

Now at a svelte 68kgs, Darren aims to maintain his weight, and hopes to inspire others who might be struggling. -----------------------------------------------------------------
