5 Celebs On The Block To Watch This Star Awards

In light of the upcoming Star Awards ceremony, who are some faces to watch?

Joel Choo

Tall, dark and handsome, this dashing young actor is widely known as the son of veteran actor Zhu Hou Ren. But being a famous actor’s son is not all there is to this tall young man. When he isn’t posting kooky and wacky Tik Tok videos, Joel can be found on screen, having played the handsome love interest of the main character in his new drama series Titoudao: Inspired by the True Story of a Wayang Star, and on C.L.I.F 5, where he plays a Staff Sergeant. While he is starting to carve out his acting career, Star Awards 2021 have certainly guaranteed him a potential springboard for the next leap in his career: Joel has been nominated in the category of Top 60 Most Popular Artistes alongside his father. How will the generational battle between father and some turn out?

Henry Thia

Surprising, no? As the saying goes, old is gold. While he is better known for his iconic roles alongside Mark Lee and Jack Neo in the Money No Enough series, Singaporeans young and old, all hold Henry dear to their hearts, pitting him against a few of the youngest and freshest of the other nominees in Top 60 Most Popular Artistes category in Star Awards 2021. While Thia has proven his status as a pillar of the local media industry, he certainly fares well in adapting to the constantly evolving media setting, even busting his groovy dance moves with younger, fellow artistes. For the 68-year-old Thia, age most certainly seems to be just a number!

Dennis Chew

Popular TV, radio host and mookata stall owner alongside fellow actor Chew Chor Meng, Chew’s nomination for the Top 60 Most Popular Artistes alongside Henry Thia and Joel Choo will determine whether or not he is slated to “graduate” and will no longer be eligible for this category by clinching his tenth win. It will be a tough fight as he competes against Felicia Chin and Zheng Ge Ping, all of whom will “graduate” with their tenth trophy if they win this category!

Pierre Png

In recent years, Png has been steadily accumulating experience and accolades under his belt, which paid off, in view of his many nominations for the past Star Awards and his reception of the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes Star Award in both 2018 and 2019. Png made his Hollywood debut in the hit movie Crazy Rich Asians as Michael Teo, even directing his first short film The Right Time, which is broadcasted on both TV and Mewatch, and playing the lead role in 2020 drama A Jungle Survivor. Png’s industrial activities in recent years have been nothing short of impressive. Will his efforts pay off this upcoming Star Awards?

Desmond Tan

The suave actor had, like Pierre Png, branched into foreign waters in the 2019 Singapore-Taiwan co-production All is Well. In the series, he plays a nefarious villain scheming another’s downfall and resorts to underhand means to cover up his company’s illegal dealings. Tan’s virgin performance as a villain in All is Well was well-received as he is contesting for the title of Best Actor Star Award alongside other big names in the industry such as Chen Han Wei, and his All is Well co-star Elvin Ng. Will Tan clinch another Best Actor award to accompany his Top Male Artist trophy from Star Awards 2019? We definitely anticipate the Star Awards results on 18th April 2021.
